Community-based nonprofit organisations are vital to the cause of public health, public safety and opportunities in the United States. Over four million children annually are served by more than five thousand local clubs through the membership organisation, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) (Boys & Girls Clubs of America, 2022). It primarily serves the economically disadvantaged and minority communities, with a focus on the needs of children and young adults in low-income and minority communities (Enns et al., 2022). This paper explores the Boys & Girls Clubs’ role in public health, public safety and social justice within the community.

Identify the organisation’s mission, vision and public health contribution.

The public health impact of an organisation is determined by their mission and vision and how they create their programs based on that. The Mission of BGCA is to “position young people and the communities they represent for success as productive members of society” (Boys & Girls Clubs of America, 2022). In particular, its program Triple Play encourages health and wellness by increasing the youth’s physical activity, healthy eating habits, and relationship quality (BGCA, 2024b). “Boys & Girls Clubs of America (2024b) found the participants demonstrated “dramatic increases in physical activity and healthy eating associated with long-term health benefits.”

Local and international assessments can show how the organisation’s vision manifests in programmes that lead to good health for the population. A Manitoba study, for example, found that a Boys & Girls Club model, in terms of health and/or life skills, helped to “reduce the risk behaviours among thousands of youth” (Enns et al., 2022). Specifically, the researchers found that being in an area where the organisation provides services is related to lower teen pregnancy and STD rates among adolescents (Enns et al., 2022). Thus, it can be concluded that the mission statement of the organisation will influence the programmes, which in turn will lead to the improvement of health in the community.

The Promotion of Equal Opportunity and Improvement of Quality of Life

Along with measuring the programs offered by the organisation, it is important to measure what happens in the community it serves to understand how the organisation works and how effective it is. Boys & Girls Clubs attempt to address various issues, including economic, social, and physical challenges, with their free after-school programs, which aim at improving access to education (Enns et al., 2022). B&GC of the Valley in Arizona is a great example of clubs that have been integrated into the community to help make it a better place with programs that cover a variety of areas of children’s development. Especially, clubs generate tremendous value, e.g., $398.5 million of community benefit (Daily Independent, 2025). For every dollar spent there, the organisation recoups $14.79, with each of the twenty thousand children in this club’s facilities using the club’s facilities. (Daily Independent, 2025)

In addition to its efforts to reach other domains of children’s growth and development, another way that it is effective is that it has helped solve other issues and facilitated services for children. In Winnipeg, for example, Enns et al. (2022) showed that after consistently attending clubs, the vulnerability of the disadvantaged population had significantly reduced. Another analysis conducted by B&GC revealed that their poor club members have a substantially increased chance of attaining mostly As and Bs compared to the national population (Boys & Girls Clubs of America, 2024c). From some examples showing improved hazard ratios for the disadvantaged, and for poor club members’ ability to achieve certain outcomes, it is reasonable to conclude that B&GC remove obstacles to equal opportunities to achieve certain outcomes. Therefore, the business demonstrates that it was first going to be providing equal opportunities to access its services and then it does.

The influence of funding sources, policy and legislation on service delivery

Sources of funding and laws in place are two factors which influence the nonprofit organization’s policy on service provisions. Boys and Girls Club received funding from the 21st Century Community Learning Centres (21st CCLC) provided by the federal Every Student Succeeds Act. The author revealed that 21st CCLC is the only mandated program which offers academic and enrichment services to students after school. To be specific, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis are using 21st CCLC funding to provide tutoring services to 21st CCLC kids from the high-poverty area of Riverview Gardens (BGCSTL, 2024).

Federal and state policies on funding allocation to entities with statutory authority and on funding of communities served by the entities are a key part of the social service provided. In fact, the funds allocated to the 21st CCLC were cut off in 2025; thus, Rochester turns to the congresspersons to resolve the issue (Finstad, 2025). Importantly, the children, families, and communities served by the club forfeit access to in-residence tutors and counsellors based in Riverview Gardens and Hazelwood as a result of the 21st CCLC funding winding down, as stated by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater St. Louis (2024). Thus, it is clear that the financing source and legislative organs on the issue have an impact on the population and communities by limiting or granting the necessary services. In this regard, the 21st CCLC funds and legislators’ interference cut off the critical services at the Boys and Girls Club, thereby impacting Hazelwood Riverview Gardens families.

The Community Health and Safety impact and the role of the Nurse

Every entity’s functions can be related to the service recipients’ social and health service needs generated by addressing a particular individual’s medical or social service need. Firstly, the Manitoba cohort study has found that levels of mathematics achievement at grade 7 are related to Club participation in the participants’ formative years (Enns et al. 2022). Second, BusinessWire noted that 70 per cent of those who responded to BGCA’s survey experienced stressful and/or overwhelming situations (2024). As a result, local government authorities must set up after-school activities that include sensory rooms, peer support, and experts to help traumatised children and stressful events (BusinessWire). This kind of collaborative structure highlights the growing need for coordinated efforts across multiple sectors of care. Since schools and community health centres do not have professionals regarding extracurricular activities, this proposal will explain why nurses should be involved in the aforesaid programs by collaborating with community health agencies (Yao et al. 2023). Indeed, nurses are expected to conduct screening assessments and interventions with children and families, in partnership with community agencies (McCabe et al. 2025).

Conclusion

The return on the investment of the programs dedicated to the future is likely 10 times greater than the return on the investments in the clubs themselves, making the Boys & Girls Clubs of America a wonderful source of information relative to the public health issue in the USA. The programs being developed in cities like Winnipeg, Arizona, Missouri and many others throughout the United States not only educate but also promote healthy and safe living. Government assistance to programs such as those in the 21st CCLC will benefit the clubs that are essential, but in need of improvement, tremendously.
