Evidence-Based Proposal and Annotated Bibliography on Technology in Nursing
One of the most prevalent diseases in the present world is Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), and, therefore, this necessitates using control measures and insulin therapy to prevent the short- and long-term complications of this disease. There are several methods available to control diabetes, and insulin pumps are among those that have been mentioned for being efficient in managing diabetes. This form of insulin delivery by subcutaneous infusion is much more effective than previous methods using more than a single insulin injection.
The major advantage of insulin pump therapy for T2DM is its ability to eliminate fluctuations of glycemia and to avoid severe episodes of hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic states. Insulin pump therapy (IPT) is a more physiological insulin delivery system than multiple daily injections (MDI) (BinDajam et al., 2025). In other words, T2DM could be treated better due to insulin pump therapy, which proved to be safe and effective. At the same time, insulin pumps allow getting rid of the delay in the delivery, and telemedicine technologies allow patients to have an instant response to any possible complication.
Another reason why I selected insulin pumps as the topic of my type 2 diabetes treatment is that it is a breakthrough technology in the field of diabetes treatment. The evidence was obtained by a thorough search in sources such as PubMed, CINAHL, and ScienceDirect. I employed the keywords: insulin pump and type 2 diabetes, continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion, safety of insulin pump patient, insulin pumps and nursing care, telehealth and insulin pump, and insulin pump and AI. The number of publications was limited to peer-reviewed papers published in English within five years.
Evidence of the Impact on Patient Safety, Quality of Care, and Interdisciplinary Team
Brown, S., Romeo, G. R., & Toschi, E. (2025). Insulin pumps for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Diabetes Spectrum, 38(3), 228–238. https://doi.org/10.2337/dsi25-0005
The article will review insulin pump therapy in adults with Type 2 diabetes, focusing on who is an appropriate patient for insulin pump therapy, key features of the insulin pump, and clinical implications for initiating insulin pump therapy. In the article, several benefits of this type of therapy over conventional insulin therapy are discussed, as many patients do not achieve their optimum A1C levels even using basal or basal-bolus insulin. It also states in the article that a combination of an insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) can be used for safer insulin delivery and to minimize the risk of severe hypo- and hyperglycemia. It is important to mention that insulin pumps are able to assist patients in their self-care management process. The function of nursing is seen to be important in educating patients about pump therapy, the compliance of therapy, and assisting them in diabetes self-management. This article was chosen because it gives a detailed description of insulin pumps as an advanced technology for quality of care in patient outcomes.
Impact of Selected Innovative Technology on Patient Safety, Quality Care, and Interdisciplinary Team
Yang, R., Yang, Z., Chi, J., & Zhu, Y. (2025). Insulin delivery devices in diabetes management: Applications and advancements. Intelligent Pharmacy, 3(3).https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ipha.2025.02.002
The present article reviews the available methods of insulin administration, namely insulin pen, smart insulin pen, and insulin pump, with special reference to patch pump in diabetes management. The article shows that insulin pump therapy, especially regimens using patch pumps, leads to better glycemic control since it reduces glucose variability and risk of hypoglycemia. The authors argue that even though the pump technologies will never be perfect, their improvement is possible in the future thanks to the development of real-time monitoring of data and new pump functions. The nurses play an important role in the correct use of the technology of the pump and in monitoring the patients in terms of compliance with the therapy in order to determine the solution to the problem of insulin delivery. This article was chosen due to its up-to-date information regarding the innovation in insulin pump technology.
Evidence to Evaluate Insulin Pumps and Organizational Behaviors
Trandafir, L. M., Moisa, S. M., Vlaiculescu, M. V., Butnariu, L. I., Boca, L. O., Constantin, M. M. L., Lupu, P. M., Brinza, C., Temneanu, O. R., & Burlacu, A. (2022). Insulin pump therapy efficacy and key factors influencing adherence in pediatric population—A narrative review. Medicina, 58(11), 1671. https://doi.org/10.3390/medicina58111671
Many components of organizational structure are involved in this article, the main focus being on the patients’ perspective on the question of adherence to the wireless insulin pump. The identification of the most important factors in the problem being studied should be done first. In the article, it was discussed that the main factors in the problem are effective communication between health care providers and patients, diabetes education of patients, the participation of the patients’ relatives in the telemedicine consultation, and the organization’s commitment of the organization. All these play a significant role in achieving the cure for the disease and ensuring quality care that works well. Another important aspect that needs to be taken into account in the research is the role of nurses in diabetes education and adherence to the treatment plan. The article reveals the fact that the efficiency of the insulin pump system not only depends on the pump itself but also on various other factors.
Implementation of Use of Insulin Pumps in Healthcare Settings
Rimon, M. T. I., Hasan, M. W., Hassan, M. F., & Cesmeci, S. (2024). Advancements in insulin pumps: A comprehensive exploration of insulin pump systems, technologies, and future directions. Pharmaceutics, 16(7), 944.https://doi.org/10.3390/pharmaceutics16070944
This article elaborates on the developments in insulin pump technology and provides information about the classification and use of the insulin pumps according to scientific information. In addition, a comparison is made between the regular pumps and insertion and patch pumps, showing the advantage of the latter over the conventional injectors. The differences between the insulin pumps are given according to the specific type of insulin pumps that can be used based on the patient’s selection and their doctor’s recommendations. However, the patients should be appropriately prepared for the use of these medical devices, and the nurses should evaluate their preparedness for the use of the insulin pumps. This article was selected because it provides information on the need for new technologies in medicine.
Artificial Intelligence and Spirometer Technology
AI technology is capable of having a significant impact on the development of insulin pump technology. Firstly, it will make it easier to regulate blood glucose and insulin. It should be noted that the application of AI technology may be implemented in such a way that it will allow monitoring of blood glucose levels in real-time and set up the optimal level of sugar in the blood depending on the diet, activity of a patient, and his/her insulin needs. The healthcare specialists are definitely interested in the application of AI technologies and education aspects for diabetic people, according to Iftikhar et al. (2024). The aim of insulin pump creation is to effectively regulate blood glucose levels and prevent hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, without any medical assistance.
Summary Of Recommendations
Considering the evidence from the above literature sources, it is possible that an insulin pump can be used in patients with type 2 diabetes. Insulin pumps would help patients control their blood glucose levels much better than insulin injections, according to Brown et al. (2025). It’s important to note that, as stated by Yang et al. (2025), various methods may be employed to continuously monitor glucose, and that artificial intelligence (AI) technology can be utilized for this process to be very effective.
Meanwhile, Trandafir et al. (2022) focus on the need for organizational aspects in the selection and use of insulin pump technology. These issues include organizational consonance with evidence-based practice, access to financial resources, presence of diabetes specialists, professional development of healthcare professionals and proper training, patient education programs, and continuous regulations that encourage collaboration in the workplace. Contrary to this, the research done by Rimon et al. (2024) revealed that organizations that invest in educating their employees, create explicit guidance for the activity, and utilize modern material and technical resources can implement functionality better than other organizations. Finally, insulin pump technology with artificial intelligence will be provided for type 2 diabetes patients, as it is safe, enhances the quality of care, and enables self-management.
Conclusion
The writer demonstrates insulin pump technology’s evidence-based innovation in the effective management of type 2 diabetes by glycemic control in this annotated bibliography. The studies cited in this annotated bibliography have found that insulin pumps improve patient safety and provide better quality of care when used with other health care workers such as nurses, endocrinologists, diabetes educators, pharmacists, and others. In general, the evidence in the annotation provides support for the use of insulin pump technology for patients with diabetes.
